Shoplifting and offences in Workington Town Centre

Individuals committing theft and fraud offences in the town centre and local businesses

Issue Date Sunday 24th March 2024

WE DID:
Arrested and charged 6 individuals for offences of whom were convicted at court.

WE DID:
Applied for 4 Criminal Behaviour Orders (CBO) in relation to 4 of the individuals and were successful. Mark McIvor, Diane Rawlinson, Raymond Kyle Smith and Mark Little were all made subject of an order. The orders were made for a period of 2 years and beyond. Mark Little received a term of 12 years

WE DID:
Arrested and charged prolific offender Nicky Hewitson with 6 offences of which he admitted in court.

WE DID:
Arrested and charged Diane Rawlinson for theft and breach of a Criminal Behaviour Order.

WE DID:
Arrested and charged Alan Kendrick for a theft from Home Bargains. Officers liaised with Copeland NPT regarding this and they applied for a Criminal Behaviour Order of which was successful. He was sentenced to 24 weeks in prison.

ASB - Town Centre
Ongoing and persistent youth related Anti-social behaviour.

ASB remains a priority for Workington Town Centre

WE DID:
•Hi Visibility Patrols in area
•Ongoing liaison with local businesses, providing crime prevention advice, reassurance and to identify the main offenders
•Youth causing issues at a local business resulting in a public order offence – youths have been identified. One has already conducted a litter pick in the town centre and one is due to do so over the coming weeks.
•Youths located climbing on scaffolding in the town centre. Youths removed from the town centre and parents informed.
•14/01/24 – Reports of youths damaging a fire alarm in a local business premises – investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible

•2 youths identified in 2 separate incidents of public order against members of staff at a local business – both interviewed and admitted the offences
•Number of youths identified and interviewed in relation to harassment, public order, criminal damage and assault offences following disorder in the area of Vulcans Lane resulting in a dispersal order. Engagement with Victims, local residents, schools and social landlords around prevention.
•5 youths arrested for breach of dispersal orders. Ongoing intervention and education

WE DID:
•Hi Visibility Patrols in area
•Ongoing liaison with local businesses, providing crime prevention advice, reassurance and to identify the main offenders
•2 youths identified in 2 separate incidents of public order against members of staff at a local business – both interviewed and admitted the offences
•4 youths interviewed in relation to harassment, public order, criminal damage and assault offences following disorder in the area of Vulcans Lane resulting in a dispersal order. These youths admitted the offences are to be dealt with by Youth Justice Service. NPT continue to engage with the Victims of these offences, local schools, social landlords and provide reassurance in the area. Any offences are dealt with proactively and positively by the NPT team who are also looking at long term prevention in conjunction with partner agencies via the Local Focus Hub. ASB will not be tolerated in the town.
•1 youth interview and admitted committing a hate related offence against another youth, this youth is currently Workington with Youth Justice Service.
•1 female youth was arrested and reported for being drunk and disorderly and assaulting 3 police officers following an incident in the town centre at conclusion of one of the Uppies and Downies Games. The female is working with Youth Justice Service.

(VAWG) – The Line, Workington
To reduce violence against women and girls’ offences in the area of the Line and help to improve safety for Women and Girls in this area. Street safe data and Police reports

Work is ongoing by Allerdale NPT in partnership with other agencies to improve this area and this is an ongoing initiative.

Funding has been received for improvements to be made to the area via the Safer Streets 5 initiative and work has started in the area. The area is due to have an official re-opening in May time involving a number of agencies.

Police and partner agencies conducted a joint walkabout in the areas to identify areas for improvement i.e. cutting back trees, improving the street lighting
NPT Officers attended Lakes College to conduct presentations around education of offences relating to violence against women and girls

Drugs - Workington Town Centre
YOU SAID: Persistent Drug related nuisance and disorder associated with an address in the Station Road, Workington location.

Drug dealing and associated nuisance and disorder in the St Michaels Church/St Michaels Ward area

WE DID: Engaged with residents and offered support and signposting

WE DID: HVP in the area and a street safe

WE DID: Worked in partnership with Riverside Housing to address the issue long term

WE DID: 1x Section 23 Misuse of Drugs Act warrant at an address on Station Road. Connor Hunter arrested and charged with Possession of Class A and Class B drug.
A leaflet drop was conducted by the local PCSO in the area to advise of the positive action taken. A press release was also conducted to highlight the positive action.

WE DID: NPT Officer stop searched a group of males in the area. One male obstructed the officer conducting the stop search resulting in the officer being injured and whilst making off, discarded a quantity of cannabis. The male turned himself in to Police and admitted offences of Possession of Class B cannabis, Obstruct police and Assault on an Emergency Worker.
